Along a Montana ranch road, water can gather beside a crossing and begin cutting at a low bank. East of the Continental Divide, wet gumbo clay can turn slick, while western valley gravel lets water drain more readily. RipRap belongs on exposed ground beside a culvert exit, along a channel edge, or at a riverbank where moving water can erode the surface. It is also suitable at shorelines where water works repeatedly against exposed soil.
Place RipRap over the part of the bank or drainage path that receives flowing water, continuing across the exposed area instead of leaving bare soil at the edge. Deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling can loosen vulnerable ground around drainage work. The material forms a substantial protective layer for runoff routes that need stone able to resist being washed away. On work near the Yellowstone River or other watercourses, inspect the route water follows before selecting the area to protect.

Creek bank finally holds through runoff
Our stretch of creek bank along the Clark Fork near Plains kept losing ground every spring runoff, eating into the pasture fence line a little more each year. Thirty tons of riprap went in along about eighty feet of bank, placed by the excavator operator my neighbor brought over with his machine while the tri axle kept the piles coming. One full runoff season later the bank has held completely, no new slumping, and the fence is finally safe from the water. Montana Rock Supply quoted less than the two other yards we called for rock that size.
